Three Wrestlers Earn Regional Titles and 11 Advance to States

Nicolas Yancey, Tyler Cabral and Jonathan Ley all earned regional titles while helping Cardinal Gibbons to a fourth-place finish at the Region 4-1A tournament, held at Jensen Beach High School on Feb. 29. 

Thanks to the efforts of Yancey, Cabral and Ley, the Chiefs amassed 191 points during the tournament, finishing just four points behind third-place finisher Jensen beach. 

Yancey (34-4), a freshman, earned first place in the 106-pound weight class, with a 3-2 decision over Jewell Williams of Jensen Beach, and Cabral (40-2), a junior, took first in the 113-pound weight class after taking down Jensen Beach's Jonny Dobbs in a 16-5 major decision. 

Ley improved his undefeated record to 24-0, after a 9-1 major decision win over American Heritage-Delray's Vincenzo Napolitana in the 145-pound weight class championship match. 

Senior John James Yancey fell short of a regional title, finishing second in the 138-pound weight class, after falling to American Heritage-Delray's undefeated Frankie Tal Shahar in a 16-3 major decision. 

Alejandro Mas and Joseph Whittaker were also top point earners for the Chiefs, finishing third in the 132-pound and 170-pound weight classes, respectively.

Sazzad Mabud (31-8), 126-pound weight class
Daniel Korchensky (29-8),152-pound weight class

Jertavis Black (35-6), 285-pound weight class
