When Alyssa Blue boarded a plane to Washington, D.C. this summer, she carried with her the curiosity of a student and returned home with something far more lasting: the confidence of a future healthcare leader.

Blue is one of over 30 Cardinal Gibbons students who participated in the Georgetown Leadership Initiatives Summer Internship Program this year, a rigorous, immersive experience that places high school students in professional environments across disciplines including Law, Medicine, Business, Neuroscience, Security, and more. We are proud to share her story as one example of the extraordinary work our students pursued this summer. Blue selected the Medical Program.

"After learning about all of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities I would be able to participate in and learn, I knew that I wanted to apply," she said.

What followed was a week that no textbook could replicate.

Inside the Program
The Georgetown Leadership Initiatives Medical Program is not a passive observation experience. Days began early, with lectures from Nigerian doctors and skills labs that moved at the pace of a working clinical environment. Our students learned CPR, intubation technique, venipuncture, and how to take and interpret vital signs.

The capstone pushed them further still. Each team diagnosed a patient and presented their clinical findings to a panel of doctors and judges, a pressure-tested exercise that mirrors real medical practice.

The Lesson No Classroom Can Teach
Ask Blue what stayed with her most and she does not hesitate. It was the team.

"The most meaningful experience I had was working together in my team," she said. "It really stood out to me because everyone was so friendly and we all supported and helped each other without even thinking about it."

She credits the experience with reshaping how she presents herself in any room.

"I think that learning how to work together and putting yourself out there to talk in front of others is something that I learned that you cannot necessarily learn in a classroom," she said. "It shaped my goals by just putting myself out there and speaking up without caring what others think of you."

This is precisely the kind of growth we hope every Cardinal Gibbons student pursues, and we are proud of Alyssa for stepping into it fully.

A Message to the Next Student
Blue is unequivocal in her advice to any fellow Cardinal Gibbons student considering a Leadership Initiatives program.

"I would over and over again say to do it, even if it is not 100 percent what you want to do in life, because it taught me so many things and life lessons that I will never forget, and I made so many new friends along the way."
