The Cardinal Gibbons boys’ and girls’ cross country teams capped off successful seasons after competing in the Region 4-2A Championship.

The boys’ team finished the season with an 11-7 record while taking third place in the District and eighth overall in the Region. Junior JaPrince Gaines led the team, earning the District 14-2A title with a time of 18:04.03 and finishing just one spot shy of qualifying for States in the Region 4-2A meet. Gaines’ other top finishes for the season include: first at the Archbishop McCarthy meet, fourth at the Monsignor Pace meet and second at the Pine Invitational.

Junior Brandon Anderson and freshman Antonio J. Dugarte also medaled at Districts with eighth and 11th place finishes, respectively.

The girls’ team finished the regular season with a 17-0 record, earning key wins at the Monsignor Pace meet and the Pine Invitational. In addition to posting an undefeated regular season record, the team had an impressive post-season run, finishing second in the District and eighth in the Region.

Sophomore Sydney Sinclair medaled in nearly every race this season, falling just one spot short of a medal and state-qualify time in the Region 4-2A championship meet.

Senior Emily Opalinski, who served as captain of the girls’ team, earned fifth at Districts, with more Chiefs following close behind. Other top Districts finishers included: Emily Baldwin 10th, Isabella Santi 11th, Audrey Parker 12th, Isabella Dugarte 13th and Sophia Huerkamp 15th.

Seniors Jennifer May and Opalinski completed their final cross country season after very successful high school careers.
