Chiefs Wrestling Earns Top Finish at Tony Ippolito Memorial Tournament

The Cardinal Gibbons varsity wrestling team finished first overall at the 2020 Tony Ippolito Memorial Wrestling Tournament, held at Brandon High School on Friday, Feb. 7. The Chiefs finished the tournament with a total of 231 points, finishing over 20 points ahead of second-place finisher Brandon High School while posting a total of 27 pins in the tournament. 

Alejandro Mas and Jonathan Ley led the Chiefs in scoring, finishing first overall in their respective weight classes. Mas, a senior, took down DeShaun Newton of Brandon High School in an 8-5 decision to take the win for the 132-pound weight class, while Ley, a sophomore, defeated Gage Tipman of Venice High School in the championship match in the 145-pound weight class to keep up his undefeated season. 

Tyler Cabral and Jertavis Black followed close behind, finishing second in the 113-pound and 285-pound weight classes, respectively. 

Other top finishers for the Chiefs included:
Nick Yancey (106) third; Sazzad Mabud (126) third; John James Yancey (138) third; Daniel Koresnsky (152) third; Joseph Whitaker (170) fourth; Matthew Velasco (106) fifth; Robert Limperis (132) fifth; Jack Limperis (160) fifth.

In total, the Chiefs had four finalists and 12 wrestlers who placed. 

The Chiefs will continue their road to the State Championship meet and try to earn their 32nd consecutive district title a the District Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the Cardinal Gibbons gymnasium.
