The Cardinal Gibbons wrestling team took first place overall at the 2021 Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) Championship on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The Chiefs finished the tournament with 238.5 total points, besting second-place Cypress Bay by nearly 50 points. St. Thomas Aquinas rounded out the top three, earning a total of 140 points in the content. This win marks the 22nd county title for the Chiefs wrestling program.
Peyton Vargas (106), Nicholas Yancey (113), Diego Peralto (132), Tyler Cabral (138) and Jertavis Black (285) were all BCAA Champions in their respective weight classes. Black also earned the BCAA Outstanding Wrestler award after defeating Marjory Stoneman Douglas' Joshua Frais in a 7-2 decision.
Other top performers for the Chiefs included Matthew Palermo (120), Robert Limperis (152) and Austin Cooper (182), who all placed second for Cardinal Gibbons. Sajid Mabud (126) and Richard Tauriello (170) both earned a top-three finish, while Christian Yancey (145) and Sean Portley (160) placed fourth and fifth in their respective weight classes.
