iTunes, Podcasts and Resources

October 21st, 2008

Students love their iPods and so do I. Music has always been a part of my life, so I was eager to buy an iPod, more popularly known to my generation as just a mini music player. Once I became familiar with iTunes, Apple’s application for organizing and playing digital audio and video content, I quickly found a variety of music that was incredibly easy to download to my computer and sync to my iPod for portability. I was hooked and began searching for podcasts to add to my iTunes library.

Podcasts are basically the creation and distribution of radio programs for playback on a computer or mobile devices such as an iPod or mp3 player. The term is derived from two words, Apple’s iPOD and broadCAST. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. You will find many professionally created podcasts and several by everyday people including teachers and students on varying topics.

iTunes is currently by far the largest repository but podcasts, audiobooks, movies, speeches, photos, slide presentations and more are readily available on the Internet. The objective of this blog is to create opportunities for personal learning, so let’s started with the iTunes basics before searching and downloading podcasts.

The easiest way to get started with podcasts is through iTunes. The iTunes Store includes over 10,000 podcasts specific for education. Podcasts are available for most subject areas and grade levels, as well as for professional development. Students and teachers can use iTunes on a Mac or PC to search, subscribe, and listen to podcasts, and even sync them to an iPod for studying and learning on the go.

Social Bookmarking with Del.icio.us

October 19th, 2008

My bookmarks (also known as favorites) were out of control. Too many bookmarks on more than one computer proved frustrating.  Then I read about social bookmarking and solved my problem with a new Web 2.0 tool called del.icio.us

In plain English, this free online bookmarking service uses tags instead of folders to organize bookmarks. You save links, annotate them with unique keywords or tags to organize them.

What makes these bookmarks social? del.icio.us takes all the bookmarks that are tagged the same way and connects them; then connects all the people with the same tag. You can even browse and search del.icio.us to find other people who have interesting bookmarks and add their links to your own collection – real easy with the use of tags.

Keep your bookmarks private or share them publicly, so your friends, colleagues, or even students can view them for interest, reference or collaboration.

del.icio.us is web-based, so bookmarks are not restricted to one physical computer.  You can access your bookmarks from anywhere, home, school or on a friend’s computer.

Yes, there are similar applications, Furl, Diigo or Backflip, but I prefer del.icio.us because of its widespread use in education.

This YouTube video explains social bookmarking and del.icio.us in just three minutes.

Your Personal Learning Network

October 13th, 2008

Web 2.0, wikis, blogs, podcasts, screencasts, social bookmarking, aggregators, tags and RSS are just a few of the current buzz words. Have you accessed Google Earth, Second Life, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Diigo, Skype or Twitter? With social networking tools and peer-to-peer interaction forming the basis for much of our student’s online activity, educators have an opportunity to embrace technologies that promote academic rigor and 21st century skills to prepare students to live, learn and work in a technology-rich world.

Sharing Resources is a weblog (commonly known as a blog) for teachers and technology leaders just beginning to investigate the potential of the Read/Write Web. This blog is designed to peek your interest and create opportunities for self-directed learning as you develop your PLN, personal learning network. (PLN is a concept credited to David Warlick) It’s about like-minded educators collaborating, participating in digital dialog to create, contribute and share best practices and explore resources for personal use, as well as for teaching and learning.

Listen to Will Richardson’s take on personal learning networks. Will is the author of one of my favorite reads “Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms“.
