Dana Deis Appointed Softball Head Coach

Dana Deis has been appointed the Lady Chiefs' new head softball coach. She is starting her third year at Gibbons, and her fifth year coaching overall. A native of Naples, Coach Deis played shortstop on a state championship team for Barron Collier High. In college, she played both soccer and softball for Nova Southeastern University (1998-2002).

Frank Pisani Named Baseball Head Coach

Frank Pisani has been hired as Cardinal Gibbons' new baseball coach. After eleven years at Douglas, Monarch, and Coconut Creek, he is excited to lead the Chiefs' program. He quoted former Major League player Al Gallagher to sum up his outlook: "There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order a bit."

Sarah Motta Commits to Lehigh University

Senior midfielder Sarah Motta has committed to playing soccer for Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Mountain Hawks play in the NCAA Division I Patriot League with historic northeastern colleges ranging from Army and Navy to Holy Cross. Sarah was named to both the soccer and lacrosse All-County teams this past year.  7/27/10

Grant, Trexler Make College Commitments

Senior soccer midfielder Jenny Grant (pictured left) has committed to Emory University. The Atlanta school is one of the most prestigious colleges in the South. The Eagles are a frequent qualifier for the NCAA Division III playoffs. The three-time defending district champions, the Lady Chiefs now have two commitments from the Class of 2011. Senior Sara Trexler (right) committed in the spring to UNC Charlotte. The all-state midfielder will join a 49er program that plays in the Division I Atlantic 10 Conference.

Tim Burton Commits to Duke University

Senior Tim Burton verbally committed to Duke University this morning. Tim, who was recruited as a defensive back, also plays running back. He had this to say about suiting up for the Blue Devils come 2011: "It's a great situation. I get a chance to get better on the football field and academically. It's a great school. It's about what Duke can do for my future."  7/26/10

Courter, Kelly Named Lacrosse Coaches

Claire Kelly has been hired as Girls Lacrosse Head Coach and James Courter has been hired as Boys Lacrosse Head Coach. Only a few years removed from captaining their college teams, both already have proven coaching records in South Florida.

Ryan Shealy '98 Called Up by Boston Red Sox

Alumnus Ryan Shealy '98 was called up by the Boston Red Sox today from Triple-A Pawtucket. A 2008 inductee into the CGHS Hall of Fame, he last played in the major leagues in 2008 for Kansas City. "It was real exciting," said Shealy. "It happened really quick. They told me last night at about midnight that I needed to get on a plane, and I flew out of Lehigh Valley at seven this morning. It was great." A right-handed first baseman, Ryan is known for his power swing: "Well, he's got a power bat and he had 12 home runs [in the Minors]," said manager Terry Francona.

Denzel Wimberly Commits to Central Michigan

Senior safety Denzel Wimberly has verbally committed to Central Michigan University. He is the first football player from the Class of 2011 to commit. Denzel, who also plays running back, had this to say about his recent trip to Mount Pleasant: "I just knew it was a nice place. The city showed me a lot of love and I really liked the coaches. I love the campus and the stadium and just the overall atmosphere at CMU."
 

Ortenzo Named First Team All-State

Recent graduate April Ortenzo was named to the All-State softball team last week. An infielder, she is headed to West Point to play for the Military Academy next year. April was one of only three Broward players selected by a Miracle Sports panel that included current and former coaches from both the high school and college ranks. She was chosen as a utility player.  6/30/10

Chiefs Football Schedule Announced

The Chiefs will kickoff their 48th varsity season with a preseason classic at McArthur on August 26th. The Gibbons squad has made the regional playoffs the past five years. District play in 8-2A includes matchups with American Heritage (Nov. 5) and Pompano Beach (Oct. 22). A game with University School in Davie (Sep. 16) is the only change from last year's opponents. A homecoming game versus Northeast (Oct. 1) will be a part of the school's 50th Jubilee weekend. Check out the complete schedule, including freshman and junior varsity games.
