Michael Greco '05 Celebrates Super Bowl Win
Safety Michael Greco '05 was on the sideline last night for the Packers' Super Bowl XLV victory in Arlington's Cowboys Stadium. A member of their practice squad, the rookie out of UCF contributed to Green Bay's 13th National Football League championship. An All-Star quarterback while at Gibbons, Greco started at QB for Central Florida before finishing his collegiate career starting at safety. 2/7/11
Jen Ridenoure '98 - NSU Hall of Famer
Alumna Jennifer Ridenoure '98 was selected for induction into the Nova Southeastern University Athletics Hall of Fame for her accomplishments on the softball field. She is the program's career wins leader. Nova will hold the ceremony on October 21st in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center on their campus in Davie. For ticket information, check out NSU's official website. Her election was announced earlier this month.
Ryan Shealy '98 Called Up by Boston Red Sox
Alumnus Ryan Shealy '98 was called up by the Boston Red Sox today from Triple-A Pawtucket. A 2008 inductee into the CGHS Hall of Fame, he last played in the major leagues in 2008 for Kansas City. "It was real exciting," said Shealy. "It happened really quick. They told me last night at about midnight that I needed to get on a plane, and I flew out of Lehigh Valley at seven this morning. It was great." A right-handed first baseman, Ryan is known for his power swing: "Well, he's got a power bat and he had 12 home runs [in the Minors]," said manager Terry Francona.
Whaley '09 Leads Hurricanes in NCAA Regional
University of Miami pitcher Eric Whaley '09 started Friday's win over Dartmouth. Friday's game was the opener of the Coral Gables NCAA regional before a crowd of more than 3,000. In only his third collegiate start, Eric allowed only two hits in four innings. The Hurricanes play Texas A&M tonight at 7:00 for the right to advance. The Miami Herald published a story Friday about Eric and his late mother. 6/7/10
Ryan Hunter-Reay '00 to Race in Indy 500
Alumnus Ryan Hunter-Reay '00 will race in his third Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. He will drive the Izod (#37) car for Andretti Autosport. Ryan will start 17th in the 94th edition of the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with close to 400,000 in the stands. He currently sits fourth in the series standings. You can watch Sunday's 500-mile, 200-lap race on ABC. It starts at 1:00.
Eric Whaley '09 Starting for UM in Playoffs
Pitcher Eric Whaley '09 started for the University of Miami baseball team against Florida State Wednesday in the opening round of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. UM won 9-3. The right-hander pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs, to collect the win. Eric has now made 27 appearances for the Hurricanes, and is 5-1 in pitching decisions.
Mike Greco '05 Signs with New York Giants
Michael Greco '05 was signed by the New York Giants on April 27th. An All-Star quarterback for Cardinal Gibbons, Greco finished his college career as a starting safety for Central Florida, helping lead the Knights to the St. Petersburg Bowl. He had played QB for UCF the previous two years, and started at that position too.
Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
Paula Ferrante, Rob Castorri '73, Michon Lubbers '85, Jason Bostic '95, Vanessa Fuchs '97, the 1973 Girls Tennis Team, and the late Coach Junior Wren will be inducted into the CGHS Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 23rd at 4:00 in the Gymnasium. Blair Walsh '08: Lou Groza Award Finalist
University of Georgia kicker Blair Walsh '08 has been named one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award, presented to the top college place-kicker in the country. Walsh, a sophomore, is the only underclassman of the group. After the regular season, Blair has 19 field goals in 21 attempts (and is 10 of 11 beyond 40 yards). He made a 53-yard kick at Oklahoma State earlier this season.
Jenna Romanelli '07, Seminoles Advance in NCAA
A captain on Cardinal Gibbons' 2006 state title volleyball team, Jenna Romanelli '07 is now a starter and captain for a Florida State team having their best season ever. The ACC champion Seminoles (30-2) beat Jacksonville State on Sunday in Tallahassee to advance to the third round of the NCAA tournament against Kentucky in Minneapolis on Friday. Jenna, a libero/defensive specialist, had 15 digs.
