BASEBALL ENTERS DISTRICT TOURNAMENT ON HOT STREAK

Due to weather, the baseball team will open up the district tournament today at Archbishop McCarthy at 4:00 vs American Heritage. The teams split the regular season contests. The Chiefs defeated American Heritage 2-1 earlier this Spring and lost a hard-fought, extra-inning game 4-3 a few weeks ago. The Chiefs won the district tournament game vs Heritage last year, 6-0.

The baseball team presently is playing its best baseball of the year. The team has won 18 of their last 20 games. The two losses over that span have come in extra innings. Recent successes can be attributed to strong pitching and defensive performances and a revival of offensive execution and big hits in big situations. The team has been led by seniors, Nate Pawelczyk and Karl Hirsch on the mound and at the plate. The two are 9-4 between them on the mound and rank #1 and #2 in batting average, RBIs, and hits on the team. Winning the Bishop Moore Catholic Challenge this spring break has given the team a wave of confidence going into the district tournament.

Hirsch Leads Baseball to Two Wins in One Day

Senior pitcher Karl Hirsch accomplished something  yesterday no other Cardinal Gibbons baseball player had ever done.  Hirsch earned two victories on the mound in one day.   Prior to the scheduled game today versus Pompano, the Chiefs resumed a 4-4 tie from a previous game that was stopped due to darkness after 9 innings.  Hirsch took the mound in the top of the 10th and retired the Tornadoes without a run.  Then in the bottom of the 10th, Hirsch singled home Senior Justin Lara to win the game.   In game two Hirsch pitched 6 scoreless innings and with the help of fellow Senior Nathan Pawelczyk’s 3 run homerun earned the victory in game 2 as well.  3/19/15
