Gibbons Teams Named Academic Champion Finalists

Six of Gibbons' Fall sports teams qualified as finalists for the FHSAA's Academic Team Champions program. The Girls Cross Country team led the way with a 3.583 un-weighted cumulative Grade Point Average. They were followed by Boys Golf (3.279), Girls Volleyball (3.263), Boys Swimming & Diving (3.169), Boys Cross Country (3.078), and Girls Swimming (3.025). Cardinal Gibbons is proud of all of its scholar-athletes.  1/9/13

Five Chiefs Named Sun Sentinel All-County

Volleyball player Ali Jacobs, golfers Sam Madsen and Sean Smothers, and football players Trevon Lee and Kadeem Smith were named First Team All-County by the Sun Sentinel on December 28th. Jacobs, a junior outside hitter/defensive specialist, led the Lady Chiefs in service points (275), digs (181), and kills (140). Madsen, a junior, took 4th at State. His teammate Smothers, who will play for Mercer College next season, helped lead the team to an 8th place finish at State.

Fighting Irish Band Coming to Gibbons

The University of Notre Dame Band will be at Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday morning (January 5th) from 10:00 until noon to practice their halftime show. The Fighting Irish Band is set to perform at the BCS National Championship Game on January 7th.

Alumnus Walsh Headed to Pro Bowl

Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh '08 was selected for the Pro Bowl on Wednesday. He is the first Gibbons graduate to be named an All-Star in a major professional sports league. The Vikings (10-6) defeated Green Bay today 37-34 in Minneapolis to clinch the sixth seed in the NFC playoffs. Walsh hit the game-winning field goal as time expired (pictured after). In his rookie season, he's made 35 of 38 FG's, including an NFL-record 10 from beyond 50 yards. He's a perfect 36 for 36 on extra points, and has scored a total of 141 points. To date, Blair is perfect on kicks longer than 50 yards. He was named conference Player of the Week twice this season.

Soccer Teams Sweep University Suns

The Girls and Boys Soccer teams picked up key district wins last night at home over University School. The Girls won 2-0. Cosette Motta and Abby Perry scored. Tricia Solenski had five saves for her fifth shutout this year. The Boys won 3-1 behind two Tony Segota goals, and one from Nick Huber12/12/12

Lady Chiefs Rout University School

The Girls Basketball team defeated University School 62-33 in a district matchup last night at their Davie campus. Diamond Williams led the Chiefs with 27 points. Other scorers were: Katie Mae Lanzon (8), Shakirah Jones (7), Michelle Cohen (6), Deniz Ozaltin (6) Kristen Pollock (4), Kylee Gregos (2), and Ashanti Armstead (2).  12/12/12

Wrestling Team Wins Bayside Tournament

The Wrestling team picked up three dual wins on Friday, and then won a traditional bracket tournament on Saturday at Bayside High in Palm Bay with 209.5 points, 43.5 points ahead of Viera. The Chiefs also topped Seminole Ridge, Bayside, Merritt Island, Cocoa, Atlantic, Hagerty, Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Lennard, and New Smyrna Beach.

Basketball Teams Sweep Pompano

The Girls Basketball team defeated Pompano Beach 55-17 last night at home, and the Boys team topped the Golden Tornadoes 60-36. All eleven Chiefs who played scored in the boys' game: Ryan Andino (8 points), Jake Simmons (8), Richard McIntosh (4), Aaron Wheeler (5), Brian Rowe (4), Clarke Niles (2), Sam Slama (7), Josh Charles (6), Rudy Leguisamo (5), Reggie Goosby (7), and Stefan Duvivier (4).

Chiefs Shut Out Ely 3-0

The Boys Soccer team picked up a 3-0 victory over Blanche Ely (6-2-1) on Friday afternoon at home. Tony Segota, Chris Delinois and Nick Huber each scored.  12/10/12

Soccer Teams Sweep Chaminade

The varsity soccer teams picked up two huge district wins yesterday. The Girls Soccer team won 2-1 at Chaminade behind two goals from Mackenzie Crittenberger, including the game-winner in the 60th minute. Abby Perry had both assists.
