Graduation History

Over the years, most Cardinal Gibbons Commencement Ceremonies have been held at War Memorial Auditorium (1969-98, 2000-10), with a handful at St. Pius X Church (1964-68) and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (1999). The school has video recordings of the graduations since 1984. Cardinal Gibbons High School graduated its first class, 28 girls and 38 boys, on June 2, 1964.

Five bishops have presided over CGHS graduations: Archbishop Carroll (1969-71), Bishop Gracida (1972-75), Archbishop McCarthy (1980, 1982), Bishop Roman (1981, 1983), and Bishop Dorsey (1987). Bishop Noonan, then supervising principal at St. Brendan, spoke in 1996. Vicar General Msgr. William Hennesey, then supervising principal at Monsignor Pace, spoke in 1993. Two presidents of St. Thomas University have spoken: Fr. Patrick O'Neill in 1982 and Msgr. Franklin Casale in 1995.

Baseball Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski was a guest speaker in 1978. Four alumni who have been ordained to the priesthood have returned to speak: Fr. Thomas Euteneuer '80 in 1997, Fr. Michael Cherup '74 in 1998, Fr. Mark Thesing '77 in 1999, and Fr. Thomas O'Flanagan '85 in 2000. Fouding St. Coleman pastor Msgr. Michael Fogarty presented the diplomas from 1965 to 1968. Founding principal Fr. Dennehy returned to address the graduates in 1975. And, former principal Fr. Kershner returned in 2004 to concelebrate the mass.
