Gibbons Wrestling Crowns Five Individual Champions While Taking First Overall at 2019 BCAA Championship

The Cardinal Gibbons varsity wrestling team took first overall at the 2019 Broward County Athletic Association Wrestling Championship on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Pompano Beach High School, while crowning five individual county champions in the process. 

The Chiefs capped off the tournament with a total of 323 points, finishing nearly 100 points ahead of second place Coral Springs Charter. 

Sophomore Tyler Cabral and junior Alejandro Mas led the Chiefs in scoring, earning 32 points each, while finishing first overall in their respective weight classes. Cabral took the county title in the 106-pound weight class with a victory over Everglades’ Omari McCray, while Mas took down Edward Punzalan of Cypress Bay in the 132-pound weight class championship. 

Freshman Jonathan Ley and seniors Brian Mas and Damiani Castro carried the Chiefs momentum, each earning county titles of their own. Ley (145) defeated Coral Springs’ Terrell Taylor in a 10-3 decision, while Brian Mas (126) and Damian Castro (182) each defeated their respective opponents by fall. 

Senior Daniel Ellison, juniors Jack Limperis and Sazzad Mabud and freshman Robert Limperis rounded out the scoring for the Chiefs, finishing second overall in the 160, 152, 113 and 120-pound weight classes, respectively. 

Several other Chiefs, including Jertavis Black, Austin Cooper, John-James Yancey and Joseph Whitaker, earned top ten finishes to secure the championship for Cardinal Gibbons.
