FLU Season Advisory

Posted On: 2/1/2018 3:55 PM

January 31, 2018

Parents and Students,

I hope you have enjoyed a smooth transition into the second semester as we end the month of January.

As all of you know, flu season is in full swing and the Center for Disease Control has stated in the past week, that 51 of 54 jurisdictions are experiencing high influenza activity. In addition, they have reported 37 influenza-related pediatric deaths so far this season. (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm) This is certainly alarming as the CDC believes that flu season still has not peaked.

In order to curb the risk of contracting or spreading the cold and flu, please speak to your son or daughter about washing their hands, covering their cough/sneeze, and not sharing items such as straws, cups, or utensils. Here at Cardinal Gibbons, we will be distributing Lysol wipes to our teachers for their classrooms.

As parents, please take an honest assessment of the health of your child. The CDC provides guidelines to taking preventive action in the following link https://www.cdc.gov/flu/school/guidance.htm  If your son or daughter is running a fever or exhibiting any other symptoms that will prevent them from staying in class then please keep your children at home and take them to
the doctor.

In regards to absences, it is the student’s responsibility to e-mail teachers and stay in contact via e-mail regarding work. It is imperative that doctor’s notes are brought in within 5 days of returning to school. (pg. 24 CGHS Parent-Student Handbook)

Together let us work to help contain the spread of the cold and flu in order to ensure the health of the Cardinal Gibbons family as a whole.

Thank you once again for your support and God Bless you and your families,

Oscar Cedeño
Dean of Students
